TALENT ATTRACTION & RETENTION

Founder: Merit – A cause-based brand
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Degree: University of Michigan
Focus: Opportunities for underserved youth
Hometown: West Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

Former University of Michigan basketball captain, David Merritt believes in “good business.” Born in West Bloomfield, Mich., Merritt graduated from U-M and launched a cause-based fashion brand called Merit. The company helps disadvantaged youth get to college by donating 20 percent of everything – not just their profits, but their entire revenue line – to fund college scholarships.

“For us, building a great economy in Michigan goes hand in hand with building great people.”

Merritt said, “That’s why we’ve dedicated our business model to helping young people aspire, believe and contribute through our high-quality products and impactful enrichment programming.”

The website, meritgoodness.com, features the product and indicates how much is donated and what impact that donation carries to youth in need. There is also a storefront in Ann Arbor. Merit also launched FATE, a four-year, cohort-based program that provides resources and opportunities for underserved youth to embrace education and become world-class citizens.

“I strongly believe that companies should be making products that positively impact the communities in which they serve.”
