Michigan State University, in partnership with Fraunhofer USA, announced a $5 million investment to expand their diamond-growing laboratory. The facility, known as the MSU-Fraunhofer Center for Coatings and Diamond Technologies, will add approximately 15,000 square feet and new diamond synthesis equipment. The center specializes in thin-film coatings to reduce friction in manufacturing and automotive applications, and in growing diamonds using a vapor phase technique for various industrial uses. The expansion is expected to double the current staff of 30 scientists and technicians and generate $7 million in annual research revenues.
“MSU and our long-term research partner, Fraunhofer USA, will triple the existing laboratory space and increase personnel and research resources to integrate and advance this mutually beneficial collaboration,” said Leo Kempel, dean of the MSU College of Engineering.
