Sparking Reliability and Efficiency in the Grid
There is a critical need to modernize the way electricity is generated and delivered from suppliers to customers. The current system is highly vulnerable to disruptions from equipment failures, natural disasters and attacks; it is susceptible to costly power outages and brownouts; and it does not efficiently integrate renewable energy into the grid. Switched Source LLC, an MSU startup and recent $1.5M ARPA-E grant recipient, has launched technology to change the current system.

URC on the Road: Infrastructure Innovation Tour
Infrastructure laid the groundwork for many debates during the midterm elections and is certain to shape the political and business landscape in the months to come. Infrastructure is the foundation of our economy and of modern society, but it is often taken for granted until it fails to work.
Michigan and the nation made big investments in infrastructure in the 20th century, which are starting to show their age and are overdue for improvement.
Over the past five years, the URC conducted $1.64 billion in infrastructure-related research and initiatives in the fields of water, mobility, energy and communication. Of this total, $274M in R&D efforts spanned more than one category, such a mobility and energy.
This fall, the URC launched the Infrastructure Innovation Tour. This tour will span the state of Michigan, convening expert teams to discuss issues and opportunities related to infrastructure and its role in daily life. Touring urban and rural areas through summer 2019, issues in focus include water infrastructure, rural broadband access, roads, PFAS, the Soo Locks and shipping/commerce.
